We are pleased to introduce our 2010 LHFI Featured Fellow                              

 Melinda Vargas earned her Associates Degree in   Community Health at Kingsborough Community College. In  February 2010, she was appointed coordinator of the Latino Health Fellowship Initiative (LHFI) Third Annual “Celebrating Latino Health and Culture” event at Hunter College.

 In addition to coordinating this annual event, Melinda’s work at LHFI also includes identifying health related internship/job opportunities, and maintaining the website. Recently, Melinda was appointed “Mundo Chair” of the American Diabetes Association’s “Feria De Salud” where she will be organizing and working with volunteers and her fellow committee members to make the August 28 “Feria De Salud” in St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx a great success.

This past year, as part of a team of Kingsborough Community Health students, Melinda created a poster that won first prize at the November 2009 Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE) 60th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. In addition she advocated on behalf of increased funding for health equity projects in Washington, DC in early March 2010. Melinda is also a “graduate” of the CUNY Campaign Against Diabetes Peer Education Training Program and the Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Training program.

LHFI Successful Past Featured Fellow  2009                                                         

Angela Donadic is currently pursuing her MPH degree from the Hunter College Urban Public Health Program as well as completing a Health Journalism Certificate from the Hunter College School of Journalism.

In September 2008, Angela was selected as a Policy Fellow at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. Her work at NLIRH includes research on reproductive health issues including STDs, birth rate, maternal mortality, female migrant farm workers, and access to insurance. She also revises and creates primers and FAQ brochures for women requiring services and blogs weekly on the NLIRH Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz site.

Recently, Angela received the 1st place 2009 Goldmann Student Paper Merit Award at the Public Health Association of New York City’s annual conference.
